Funeral services for Kenneth Reed, 64 years old Covington RR 1 resident, who was fatally injured Wednesday morning May 23 when he was struck by an automobile while flagging traffic on US 41, two miles north of Morocco were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. Billie Rudd, pastor of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church officiated and burial was in Lower Mount Cemetery.  Mr. Reed was employed as a flagman by the Dyer Construction Co of Dyer. According to the State Police report of the accident, Mr. Reed died almost immediately after being struck by a car driven by William T. Ratcliff, age 68 of Gary who apparently failed to see the flagman. The accident victim was thrown 58 feet from the point of impact and death was said to have been caused by multiple internal injuries. The Fountain County flagman had stopped traffic to permit construction machinery to cross the highway. Investigating officers said one northbound car had stopped by a second, driven by Ratcliff pulled onto the east berm and was attempting to pass the stopped auto when it struck Mr. Reed.  Mr. Reed, who had lived in the Covington community most of his life was born Aug 13, 1897 at Silverwood, a son of Joseph and Susan Buckley French Reed. He was married Nov 25, 1916 to Hazel Martin who survives. He was a member of Labor Union No 564 of Clinton.  Surviving in addition to his wife are: five children, Mrs. Dorothea Farrar of Catlin, Ill, Rt 1, Earl K. of Covington, Rt 1, George of Pimento Rt 1, Mrs. Delores Ann Bowman of Hillsboro and Mrs. Edna Fouts of Indianapolis; one stepson, Charles Boughner of Danville, Ill; one brother, Otto of Kingman Rt 2; three half-brothers, Daniel B. and William French both of Jacksonville Fla and Brent French of Danville, Ill and 14 grandchildren. – kbz
