Grover Rayphole, 84, of Veedersburg, Ind., was dead on arrival at Lake View Memorial Friday night shortly after he was struck by a car as he was crossing Main Street in Fairmount, Ill. Coroner Don Goodwin said death was from internal injuries. An inquest has been set for 10 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. Rayphole and a friend, Lyle Graham, 63, also of Veedersburg, were crossing the street at the extreme north end of Fairmount when Rayphole was struck by a car driven by Lawrence Burnett, 60, of Bryan, Ohio. The accident happened near Greer's Auction where an auction sale was going on, Goodwin said. Burnett told a state trooper that he was headed south and had just passed a northbound car when two men standing on the east side of the road darted into the street. After the impact, Burnett's car veered to the left and struck a parked pickup owned by Joseph E. Roose, of 315 S. L, Tilton. Mr. Rayphole's companion, Graham, was not injured. Burnett was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.   --waw
