COVINGTON — Fred E. Rayfield, 92, Covington, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2007 in his residence. He was born Aug. 27, 1914 in Weogufka, Ala., the son of William B. and Maude (Basemore) Rayfield. He married Martha Elizabeth Abolt Sept. 4, 1938 in Williamsport. She preceded in death Oct. 12, 2003. He was raised near Ambia, in Warren County, graduating from Ambia High School in 1932. He had lived in Dyer and Hammond for 40 years, before moving to Covington in 1985. He worked as a logistics manager for the Commonwealth Edison Power Plant in Hammond for 40 years, retiring in 1976. He served during World War II in the U. S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a member of Covington United Methodist Church, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Masonic Lodge of Covington, Order of the Eastern Star of Covington, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, and Air Force Association. In his younger years, he was an avid trap and skeet shooter and had traveled to the Grand Nationals in Trap & Skeet. He loved woodworking and studying military history. Survivors include: a son, Robert (Claudine) Rayfield, Aurora, Oregon; a brother, William Rayfield, Crawfordsville; and two grandchildren, Kari Schuck, Portland, Oregon and Daniel Rayfield, Albany, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Benton Rayfield; and a sister, Mary Rayfield. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with Pastor Tom Hoehner officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
