Harry Ray, age 60, of Rochester, Ind., former Covington High School coach and son of Mrs. Catherine Ray, 211 Ninth St., died Monday, Sept. 4, of a heart ailment. He was born in 1900 in the Mellott community in Fountain County. He was a graduate of the Richland Township High School and Purdue University. He coached in the local high school for one year and also taught at Hillsboro and Wingate High Schools in this area. He was married to the former Elizabeth Coats of Veedersburg, who survives. Other survivors, in addition to his wife, are: one son, William; his mother, Mrs. Ray of Covington; one brother, Robert (Bob) Ray, Second St., and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Shafer of Covington and Mrs. Frances Fogleman of Edinburg. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Sept. 6, in Rochester with burial there. Local relatives attended the services. -- typed by Walt W

Harry E. “Penny” Ray, 60, a native of Fountain County and a veteran athletic coach and teacher in Indiana HS died in Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, Indiana on Monday Sept 4, 1961. He had suddenly become ill while fishing on Lake Manitou and died a few hours after admission to a nearby hospital. He was a freshman basketball coach and had taught government in the Rochester HS for 18 years at the time of his death. Born in Mellott in 1900, the son of Charles Ray and Katherine Cunningham Ray, he had previously taught and coached basketball at Hillsboro, Wingate, Mt. Comfort, Covington, Plymouth and Argos before going to Rochester. He was a graduate of Purdue University and held a Master’s Degree from Indiana University. On Aug 5, 1930 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Coats of Veedersburg. A son, Bill Ray of Manhattan Beach, Calif survives. Mr. Ray was a member of the Christian Church of Mellott and attended the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester. He was a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite at South Bend and Mispah Temple Shrine in Ft. Wayne. He was a charter member of the Lions Club at Argos. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Ray; a son, Bill Ray of Manhattan Beach, Cal; his mother, Mrs. Charles Ray; a brother, Robert Ray both of Covington; two sisters, Mrs. Clare Shafer of Covington and Mrs. Donald Fogelman of Edinburg and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Foster & Good Funeral Home in Rochester at 2 p.m. Wednesday the Rev. Schumuacher of United Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was in Rochester

MELLOTT — Friends have received word of the sudden death of Harry E. Ray of Rochester, formerly of the Mellott community. He was born and reared on a farm near Mellott and was the son of Charles and Kate Cunningham Ray. Mr. Ray was a teacher and coach at Rochester High School. He had taught government in the school for 18 years. Early in his teaching career he taught and coached basketball in the Hillsboro and Wingate schools. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Rochester Masonic Lodge and the South Bend Scottish Rite. He is survived by his widow; Mrs. Elizabeth Ray; a son, William, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Kate Ray of Covington; a brother, Robert, and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Shafer, also of Covington; and Mrs. Donald Fogelman of Edinburg.
