Source: The obituary is from a collection of newspaper (paper names not recorded) obituaries saved, by Fauniel Hershberger, during the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's. She was a life long resident of Fountain County Indiana.  The collection is now housed at Crawfordsville District Public Library.

John Rater, 81, of Attica Route 3 and a life resident of Warren County, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday (Aug. 23, 1968) at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette where he had been a patient for one week. He had been in failing health for three years. Born in Warren County April 7, 1887, he was the son of Issac and Alma Moore Rater. He was married June 23, 1909 in Williamsport to Addie Vaughn who survives. Mr. Rater, a retired farmer, was Warren County commissioner for nine years, bulk oil truck driver for the farm bureau for 12 years, state highway patrolman for four years and worked for the county highway department for several years. He was a member of the Pine Valley Lodge 315 AF&AM and received his 50-year pin on Jan. 4, 1966. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Helen Amstutz of Forrest, Ill., and Mrs. Marie Brown of Lafayette; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and two sisters. Services Monday at the DeSutter Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eldon Brown officiating. Masonic services at the funeral home Sunday.   -- typed by Walt W
