Thomas J. Ratcliff, was born Jan 13, 1842 in Sugar Creek Township, Parke County, IN and died August 29, 1920 near Kingman. He was the third son of John and Mary Clark Ratcliff. He served in Co I 31st Reg of the Civil War. He married Barbara Gray in 1868, she died in 1909 They were the parents of 3 children: Mary Estella who died young and Capitola and Cedella who survive. They reared his niece, Juliet A, who was the daughter of Thomas R. and Juliet Gray Ratcliff. She lived with them until her marriage to James Sowers Jr. Julia A. Sowers was the mother of Gordon, Cliston and Virginia Sowers. --kbz
