A 30-year-old woman, a resident of Attica, Rt 2, became Fountain County’s 13th traffic fatality at 5:47 p.m. Monday Dec 31 when the car in which she was riding was involved in a two-car crash at the intersection of Bethel Road and Riverside Road, fives miles east of Attica.  Dead on arrival at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette was Mrs. Mary Poynter and her death was attributed to a crushed chest and broken neck.  Her husband, James, who was driving their car west on the Bethel Road sustained a puncture wound of the lower right leg and a broken left shoulder blade. He was taken to the Community Hospital at Williamsport, where he is being treated. The other car, driving by Harry L. Pearson, age 25, resident of Otterbein Rt 2 was headed south on the Riverside Road. State Trooper Don Wood who investigated said the Pearson car was driving in front of the Poynter vehicle. Pearson sustained bruises and abrasions. His wife, Betty Jo, their 3-year-old daughter, Sheila Joan and their 8-month old son, Christopher Allen, suffered minor cuts and bruises.  They were all treated at the Community Hospital in Williamsport and then dismissed.  Following the collision of the two cars they both traveled about 50-60’ and came to a stop in a wheat field on the Charles Peterson farm. Mrs. Poynter was thrown from their car and was entangled in a fence.  It took several minutes to cut her free from the fence. The Pearson car struck a telephone pole and snapped it into two pieces. Both vehicles were totally wrecked. Mrs. Poynter was born in Burkesville, Ky Dec 1, 1932 the daughter of Henry and Lucy Anderson Carey.  She was educated in Cave City, Ky and was married to James Poynter on May 27, 1950. The Poynters moved to Attica 10 years ago and had lived at their present home, Attica Rt 2 for two years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
