VEEDERSBURG — Luther E. Ponder, Sr., 87, 2626 S. Barker Rd., died at 3:17 a.m. July 28, 1999, at Provena USMC Logan Campus in Danville, Ill. Born May 22, 1912, in Berea, Ky., he was the son of May and Pattie Maupin Ponder. He married Freda Pauline Hughes Dec. 5, 1936 in Covington. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1977. He was a former employee of Hegeler Zinc Co. and C & E I Railroad as a conductor, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Brotherhood of Trainmen and Switchmen. Survivors include: sons, Roy Edward Ponder, Veedersburg, Robert Dale (Patricia) Ponder, Veedersburg, Luther E. Ponder Jr., Veedersburg; daughter Nancy Carol Houser, Danville, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers; and four sisters. Funeral services were 11 a.m., July 30 at Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Pastor Paul Kent officiating. Burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Danville, Ill. – jlr
