Mellott, Ind July 21 – Mrs. Jessie Pitman age 27 (sic) wife of the Rev. F.R. Pitman, pastor of the First Baptist Church at Covington was buried at Crawfordsville yesterday. Mrs. Pitman died in the Home Hospital at Lafayette of ptomaine poisoning.

Although fully aware of the fact that death is the inexorable sequence of living, there are times when its coming occasions unusual bereavement. Such is the case in the death of Mrs. Russell Pittman. She was only 30 years old, the beloved wife of a splendid young minister, an only daughter with years of happiness to look forward to. She loved to live; had, it might be said, all that makes one want to live – all that makes life satisfactory, meaningful and sweet – all but the priceless boon of robust health. When on Thursday of this week, she felt the issue was against her, she accepted it with uncomplaining resignation, serene in the faith that all would be well. She lived as becometh a Christian woman and she died as becometh one. Could one wish to leave a better or more beautiful memory than that? Jessie Goben Pittman was a former Crawfordsville girl. Seven years ago on Christmas Day she became the wife of Mr. Pittman. Delphi first knew her when she and her husband came here to reside when he was chosen pastor of the Delphi Baptist Church. After serving faithfully here for a few years, he resigned his pastorate but kept his residence in this city. Mr. Pittman has charge now of the Covington and Sitka Baptist Churches. His wife was a genial and efficient helper and devoted wife. She was of a happy disposition and all with whom she came in contact were her friends. Mrs. Pittman realized the seriousness of her illness and on Thursday bade goodbye to her husband and friends who were at the hospital. She had been bedfast only two weeks, although she had not been well for two years. Her condition became more serious as the days advanced and on Monday, she was taken to Home Hospital, Lafayette. She became gradually worse and on Thursday slight hopes were entertained for her recovery. She died Friday morning at 5 o’clock, death being due to stomach trouble. She leaves her husband, her father and stepmother. The funeral will be held at the Delphi Baptist Church Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. The body will lie in state at her home until that hour and also at the church for a short time preceding the service. At this service the people of Sitka will have an opportunity to be present. The service will be in charge of Rev. EM Martinson, assisted by Rev. BE Antrobus. From Delphi, the funeral cortege will proceed to Crawfordsville, the home of the Pittmans where services will be held in the First Baptist Church in charge of the pastor, Rev. D Heitmeyer. The Rev. BE Antrobus of Madison, a personal friend will deliver the sermon. The Covington people, of Rev. Pittman’s Church will have an opportunity to attend the services at Crawfordsville at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. FR Pittman has the sincere sympathy of large circles of friends in the communities he has served in a pastoral capacity. The memory of the gracious personality of Mrs. Pittman will linger like a benediction for years to come.
