Dallas Leon Ping, 18, Rt. 1, Covington, died 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Burnham City Hospital at Champaign, Ill., where he had been a patient eight days after suffering a fractured neck in a swimming accident near Snoddy’s Mill June 20.

The young man, a newlywed, dived from the creek bank into what he believed to be a deep hole; however, apparently the shifting creek bed had reduced the depth to about four feet. His companions supported his body in the creek until help was summoned after he complained of having no feeling in his arms and legs.

He was born Oct. 5, 1956, at Danville, Ill., son of Willard and Barbara Jean Ping. He was married May 16, 1975, to Sandra Lynn Newell, who survives.

Surviving with his wife and parents, all of Rt. 1, Covington, are the paternal grandparents, Ralph J. and Lucille Ping, Rt. 1, Covington; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Smith, Rt. 1, Kingman; paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Maude Davis, Rt. 1, Covington; several aunts and uncles.

A life resident of Wabash Township, he graduated from Covington High School and had been employed as a molder at Fountain Foundry at Veedersburg. He was a former Boy Scout.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Rev. Dale Cadman officiating. Burial will be at Coal Creek Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral Home after 2 p.m. Monday.
