Oxford—Ruth E. Pierce, 92, a resident of Edgewood Healthcare, Oxford, formerly of Route 1, Pine Village, died at 7:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 1989, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She had been ill two days.
She was born Oct. 26, 1896, and had resided in Warren and Benton counties most of her life. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Fowler, received her bachelor’s degree at St. Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, and her master’s degree from Purdue University in 1957.
She began teaching in Pine Village High School and later taught at Jefferson High School in Lafayette and at Dyer High School at Dyer until her retirement. While at Dyer, she was sponsor of the school newspaper, the Comet, and was a member of the Indiana High School Press Association and National Scholastic Press Association.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Oxford; Holy Name Society; National Retired Teachers Association; Indiana Retired Teachers Association; Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority; and Pine Village Literary Club. She also was an active member of the local bridge club in Pine Village.
Surviving are one sister, Irene Jones, Oxford, and two nieces, Wenonah Kay Garriott, Attica, and Wetanah Ann Brown, Fowler. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Paul and Harry Pierce Jr., and two sisters, Rita and Mary.
Funeral Mass was at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Oxford, with Father John Kiefer officiating. Burial was in Oxford Catholic Cemetery.
Hahn Funeral Home, Oxford, was in charge of arrangements.
Parish Wake service was at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. -s
