COVINGTON – Richard V. Pierce, 65, retired Olin Mathieson Corp. employee, died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient 10 days. He had retired in 1970 due to ill health. A native of Arvonia, Va., he was a son of Richard S. and Carrie Dennis Pierce and was born Nov. 12, 1906. He was a 1928 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. His wife, Catherine, preceded him in death. Mr. Pierce was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Arvonia and also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Catherine, at home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McDow-Tyree Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Va., with burial in Riverview Cemetery there. Memorial rites will be held at 11 a.m. next Saturday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Dr. Eric Dean of Wabash College officiating. The family requests memorials be made to the Heart and Respiratory Fund or the Cancer Fund. -– jlr
