Newtown – Mrs. Dessie B. Pierce, 78 of Newtown, died at 3 a.m. Monday in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She had been ill four months. Mrs. Pierce, a native of North Salem, was first married in 1914 to Arnett Ratcliff who died in 1920. In 1930 she married John Pierce and he survives. She was a member of the Newtown United Methodist Church, WSCS, and Pythian Sisters. Surviving with the husband are one daughter, Mrs. Flora Pope of Lafayette; two sons, Russell E. Ratcliff of Mellott and Gale L. Pierce of Jamestown; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Eichelberger of Veedersburg; two half sisters, Mrs. Lola Martin of Toledo, Ohio and Mrs. Geneva Delbridge of Glendale, Calif and two half brothers, Leslie Hedge of Indianapolis and Emanuel Hedge of Tennessee.

“Funeral Notices” -- Mrs. John Pierce – Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at Crumley-Williams Funeral Home, Hillsboro. The body will lie in state one hour in Newtown United Methodist Church prior to services there at 2 pm. Wednesday, Rev. Walter C. Williams officiating. Burial in Newtown Cemetery. NEWTOWN -- Mrs. Dessie B. Pierce, 40-year resident of Newtown, died early Monday morning at Home Hospital, Lafayette. Mrs. Pierce, 78, had been in declining health for the last four months, and was admitted to the hospital about two weeks ago. Her husband, John Pierce, survives. The couple were married on Sept. 2, 1930. The deceased was a member of the Newtown United Methodist Church, and its affiliate organization, the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was also a member of the Newtown Pythian Sisters chapter. Born at North Salem on Oct. 8, 1891, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Flora Gardner Hedge. She was first married to Arnett Ratcliff in 1915. He preceded her in death in 1920. Other survivors include two sons, Russell E. Ratcliff of Mellott and Gale L. Pierce of Jamestown; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Flora) Pope of Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Eichelberger of Sterling; two half sisters, Mrs. Lola Martin of Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Geneva Delbridge of Glendale, Calif.; two half brothers, Leslie Hedge of Indianapolis and Emanuel Hedge who resides in Tennessee, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Newtown UMC with Rev. Walter Williams in charge. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Burial will be in the Newtown Cemetery. --typed by Walt W
