Lester Ivan Pickett, 52 years old, a native of Veedersburg and a veteran of both WWI and WWII was killed instantly at 7:10 o’clock Saturday night Oct 6 when struck by an automobile on US Rt 136 about two miles west of the Illinois-Indiana state line. The car was driven by Freddier Volmer of Covington which was westbound and passed another westbound car near the Lynch school. The victim was walking east in the south of eastbound lane according to Danville authorities and was struck by the left front fender of Volmer’s car and thrown upward and over the car about 15’. Police said the misty rain made visibility poor. Mr. Pickett was born May 24, 1899 in Veedersburg where he had spent nearly all of his life. He was the son of George and Winona Ryle Pickett. He was married in 1920 to Cecile Phillips who died in 1939. Surviving are four sons, Howard in the US Navy in California and George in the Navy at Norfolk, VA; Lester of Veedersburg and Bobby of Attica; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Flagg of Olympia, Wash and Mrs. Beatrice Kelly of Stone Bluff; two brothers, John and Earl Pickett of Veedersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Velma Griskell of Danville; Mrs. Sylvia Hancock of Stone Bluff and Mrs. Eileen Tibbets of Attica; a half brother, Arnold Pickett and two half sisters, Ruth Ann and Alma Pickett all the Veedersburg community. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fishero Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Robert Fyffe of the Stone Bluff EUB church and graveside military rites held by Charles Forrest Post of the American Legion in the Veedersburg Old Town Cemetery. About 25 uniformed Legionnaires, wearing new white helmets, gloves and leggings marched behind the color guard and firing squad to the cemetery. - kbz
