PEFFLEY, Reba Meyers - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

It was her horse, Nellie and the surrey Reba liked the best,

As they'd wend their way through Hillsboro over lofty crest,

To view that glorious bountiful land,

With crops and cattle on every hand.

Her many years associated with the farm has played an important part in Reba's life.

Born Dec. 18, 1906 in Kingman, Ind., she was the youngest of two daughters born to Mr. Alva Meyers and Mrs. Anna Cory Meyers. As a very small child her family moved to a farm near Hillsboro Indiana. She attended the Ellis Grade School to the eighth grade. Her fourth grade schoolteacher and high school principal, Miss Francis Taylor, she remembers very well. Miss Taylor left Hillsboro high for Hammond, Ind., where she was on the teaching staff for Hammond High for many years until her retirement a few years ago. After her graduation from Hillsboro High in 1925, Reba moved to Crawfordsville, Ind. to take a position with a family as a housekeeper. It was during this time that she met Carl Peffley, whom she later married on Feb. 8, 1929. They had worked there for three years when an opportunity arose to move to a farm in Russelville, Ind. The option, however, only lasted three years and they soon found themselves back in Crawfordsville where her husband began a job with Allison Aviation Co. Unhappy with their current lifestyle, they were fortunate to be able to move to a new job opening on the Wilt Spotted Poland China farm in Fountain County, Ind. They loved their life on this farm and were very sad the day the farm was sold. Through a friend came word of an opening on a farm near Lowell, Ind. With much persuasion they agreed to come to the Dale Flickenger Farm on South Rt. 2. In his third year of working on the farm, Mr. Peffley met with a most unfortunate accident which left him partially paralyzed. They then moved to Lowell where they have lived on Nichols St., Washington St., and for the last 23 years at 216 N. Castle St. Mr. and Peffley had two children, a daughter, Vivian Ann, born Feb. 3, 1930 and a son, Alva Franklin who was born Feb. 13, 1933. Reba has just recently returned from Baldwin, Miss. where she visited her son, his wife and granddaughter. Her son just recently retired from 21 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. After a lengthy illness, Mr. Peffley passed away Nov. 11, 1965 at Hines Vet. Hosp.in Hines, Ill. He was a World War I Veteran and a member of the American Legion and the VFW. Reba has been a familiar face in and around our community for a good many years. She has been active with both the Legion and [Story ends in the middle of this sentence.]
