Newtown--Fred C. Palin, 86, national corn king in 1909 and a resident of the Newtown community for the past 55 years, died Saturday afternoon at six o'clock at his home here. He had been ill several days and death was attributed to heart trouble. Born July 5, 1863, one mile east of Newtown, he was the son of Jesse and Mary Fry Palin. He married Mary Williams in Potomac, Ill., Nov. 2, 1887. Palin was a member of the Wingate Christian church and was a charter member of the Hetfeld chapter of the K. of P. lodge. He attended Merom college. Fifty-five years ago the Palins moved back to Newtown and for 50 years he worked the Milligan farm here. In 1909 he took the grand championship for a single yellow ear of corn. He was honored last fall by Purdue university for his work in soil and crop conservation with a trophy of merit award. Surviving are the widow; a son, Carl, of West Point; three daughters, Agatha, at home, Ozark of Newtown and Huldah of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. S. E. Bond, of Richmond; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock (CDT) from the Newtown Methodist church. Rev. William Leffing will be in charge and burial will be in Newtown cemetery. Friends may call at the home. --typed by Walt W
