WILLIAMSPORT — Helen Jean (Jernagan) Painter, 69, a resident of Williamsport, died at the home of her son, Jay Painter, in Ambia, at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000. She had been in ill health the past two months. She was born Aug. 26, 1930 in Hoopeston, Ill., the daughter of Charles S. and Willa B. Elliott Jernagan. She married Jasper E. Painter Sept. 29, 1946 in Hoopeston, Ill. He was an employee of Interstate Sand and Gravel Company, who preceded in death July 4, 1995. She had lived in the Judyville community for 33 years before moving to Williamsport in 1992. She had been employed in the cafeteria at Seeger Memorial High School for 20 years, then later worked for Area 4 Council on Aging. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church at West Lebanon. She loved doing hobby crafts, quilting and crocheting. Survivors include: two sons, Steven A. Painter, Montezuma and Jay E. (Jane) Painter, Ambia; two daughters, Deborah H. (David) Cronkhite, Williamsport and Vickie J. (Eric) Schlene, West Lafayette; nine grandchildren, Shannon Painter, Joshua Painter, Amy Hale, Jaclyn Cronkhite, Jacob painter, Michael Cronkhite, Jennie Painter, Marty Schlene and Hank Schlene; and a great-grandson, Nathaniel Painter. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three siblings and a great-grandson, Barry Painter. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Presbyterian Church, West Lebanon, with the Rev. Gerald Burt officiating. Burial was in Locust Grove Cemetery.
