Columbia City - Mrs. Hazel Pitman Munns, 63, superintendent of music of the Columbia City Public Schools died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Mrs. Munns devoted 36 years of her life as a teacher and administer in Columbia City. She began her teaching career in 1933 in Veedersburg and in 1936 moved to Columbia City. Mrs. Munns was born in Hillsboro Oct 12, 1899. Her parents were Finis M. and Gertie Ellis Pittman. She was married in Columbia City in 1935 to Merrell Munns. She was a member of the Hillsboro Methodist Church. Mrs. Munns received her education at the Chicago Music College and American Conservatory of Music. She also attended several sessions of the Fred Waring Music Workshops at Delaware Gape, PA. She was a member of Tri-Kappa Sorority. Survivors include the husband, a brother, Glenn Pitman, Hillsboro, and two nieces, Mrs. William Truce and Mrs. Leland Owens, both of Lafayette. Rites will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at the new Columbia City High School. Prior to services the body will lie in state in the school auditorium. Friends may call beginning Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Columbia City. Burial will be in the Waynetown Cemetery at noon Friday.

Funeral services were held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium of the Columbia City joint high school for a music supervisor and teacher in local schools since 1927, Mrs. C. Merrell (Hazel Pitman) Munns.
Mrs. Munns died at 3:40 CST Monday afternoon at St. nary's Hospital at Rochester, Minn., where she had been a patient since December 9. She became ill after the start of school in September and had been at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne and at Rochester.
She was born October 12, 1899, at Hillsboro, the daughter of Finis M. and Gertie Ellis Pitman. She came from a musical family and had said that she sang before she talked. She started the study of the violin at the age of 9. During her high school years she played the violin, accompanied by a friend at the piano for silent movies.
She received her training at the Chicago Musical College and did advanced work at the Columbia School of Music and American Conservatory of Music. She sang with the Noble Cain Choir over NBS during her student days.
The 1932 annual "Columbian" of the Columbia City HS was dedicated to Mrs. Munn sand the electric organ in the Columbia City Joint HS auditorium was dedicated to her in April 1959 in a surprise ceremony. The organ was presented to the school by the Alpha Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority of which Mrs. Munns was an active member "to recognize and pay tribute to the vivacious and talented choir and music director in Columbia City since 1927. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Hillsboro. She taught music at Veedersburg for three years before coming to this community.
She was married to C. Merrell Munns in 1935 and they lived at 108 West Jefferson Street.
Survivors includer her husband; a brother, Glenn Pitman, Lafayette; two nieces, Mrs. William (Eloise) Truce and Mrs. Leland (Margaret) Owens, Lafayette.
Mrs. Munns was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mrs. Vertie McBroom and brother, Cecil.
Friday morning starting at 8:30 the body will be taken to the Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown for the committal service and burial at 12:00 noon. - jz
