Covington - A rural Covington man died shortly before midnight Wednesday when his car crashed into a parked vehicle while according to officers, he was in pursuit of a group of unknown persons he believed has stolen gasoline from his residence. Ernest Moudy, 52, of Rt 2, died of massive internal injuries according to Warren County Coroner Harold Brazzell. The crash took place three-tenths of a mile north of US 136 on Co Road 9 in Warren County near Foster, state police said. Trooper Dale Conrad and Dave Landis who investigated the accident were unable to determine how much gasoline the persons were alledged to have taken or whether it was taken from a vehicle or storage tank. Moudy apparently lost control of his 1973 station wagon allowing it to run off the roadway. The vehicle traveled 342' through a residential lawn before hitting the parked auto, the troopers said. The persons Moudy was chasing did not stop. The troopers were assisted by deputies from warren and Vermillion counties. The investigation is continuing. Mr. Moudy was owner of Foster Grain Co, located at Foster. He had been a trustee of Mound Twp in Warren County for two terms and also served on the Covington Community School Board six years. He was a member of Mound Lodge 274, F&AM and Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis. Mr. Moudy was a life resident of the Foster community and graduated from Covington HS in 1939. He had been a farmer all his life in addition to operating his elevator business. He was born July 25, 1920 in Warren County, son of Ernest A. and Iva Gouty Moudy. He married Mary Margaret Galloway August 11, 1940. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Owen of Rt. 2, Covington and Alan C. of Rt 2, Covington; a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Marianne) Martin of Rt 3, Covington; three sisters, Mrs. Leland (Dorotha) Hogan of Rt 1, Sidell, Ill; Mrs. Oliver (Roberta) Moorhous of Rt 2, Covington and Mrs. TW (Vera) Wilson of Rt 2, Covington; a grandson; two stepgrandsons and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, his parents and twin granddaughters. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home at Covington, The Rev. Robert Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday. Masonic services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday.

Ernest Moudy, 52, Rt. 2, Covington, owner of Foster Grain Co., was killed shortly before midnight Wednesday when his car veered off a Warren County road and struck a parked automobile, state police reported. He was also a former Mound Township Trustee and served six years on the Covington School Board.
The cause of Moudy’s death had been listed as massive internal injuries, but Warren County Coroner Harold Brazzell ruled Thursday that Moudy had died of a heart attack before his car went off the road.
At the time of the accident, Moudy was en route on County Road 9, three tenths of a mile north of U.S. 136, reportedly in pursuit of subjects believed to have stolen gasoline from his property.
His car left the roadway, continued on through a residential yard for 342 feet before striking the parked vehicle.
Cause of death was listed by state police as massive internal injuries; however, authorities today were checking into the possibility that Moudy may have suffered a heart attack. An autopsy was being performed Thursday morning.
Investigating were troopers Dale Conrad, Dave Landes and the Warren County Sheriff’ Department.
Moudy was born July 25, 1920, Mound Township (Foster) Warren County.
He was the son of Ernest A. and Iva T. Gouty Moudy. His marriage was August 11, 1940 to Mary Margaret Galloway, who survives along with two sons, Owen of Rt. 3, Covington, and Alan C. of Rt. 2, Covington; one grandson; two step grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Leland (Dorotha) Hogan, Rt. 1, Sidell, Ill., Mrs. Oliver (Roberta) Moorehouse of Rt. 2, Covington, and Mrs. T. W. (Vera) Wilson of Rt. 2, Covington, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two twin granddaughters and his parents.
He was a life resident of the Foster Community and had been a farmer all his life. He was the owner of Foster Grain Co.
Moudy was a 1939 graduate of Covington High School. He served two terms as trustee for Mound Township And six years as a member of the Covington School Board. He was a member of Mound Lodge 274, F and AM at State Line, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis.
Funeral was 2 p.m. Saturday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Rev. Robert Miller officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery

FOSTER, Ind. – Ernest "Ernie" Moudy, 52, Foster businessman and farmer, was killed instantly at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday while in pursuit of gasoline thieves. (Obit on Page 23.) Moudy lost control of the van he was driving, went 342 feet through a yard and crashed into a parked pickup truck in the driveway of the Duane Reed residence. The truck was pushed into a stock race car and trailer parked in the driveway. The accident occurred just south and across the railroad tracks from the Foster Grain Co, owned by Mr. Moudy. State police report that Mr. Moudy had seen a subject or subjects taking gasoline from a tank on his property. The Moudys reside next to the gran company. He humped into a van and chased the fleeting subject south on the Foster blacktop. The accident site was three-tenths of a mile north of U.S. Route 136. Warren County Coroner Harold Brazzell reported Moudy died of massive internal injuries. State Trooper Dale Conrad and Dave Landis and the Warren County Sheriff's department investigated. Vermillion County Sheriff's department had a unit on the scene also was the first report gave the accident as being in Vermillion County rather than in Warren County.
