The following obituary was read: "Amanda C. Morgan first saw the light of day on her father's farm in Sugar Creek Township, Parke County, on September 3, 1859, and departed from earth's dark shadows to Eternal Life on April 19, at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 16 days. She was the daughter of Bryant and Anne Sowers Barker. The greater part of her early life was spent in Sugar Creek township. On Feb. 14, 1877 she was united in marriage to Joseph N. Morgan. Five children came to bless their home, four sons, Courtney, Cecil, Stanley and Homer and one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Smith. The husband, one son, Homer and two grandsons having preceded her in death. Joseph Morgan passed away Nov. 19, 1923 and Homer died May 1, 1928. The deceased leaves to mourn her passing, three sons, one daughter, twenty-two grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Morgan has lived in the community for 35 years and we, her neighbors, know her as a devoted mother and a kind and sympathetic neighbor. Deeds that men call great are often forgotten but there are things the heart cannot forget, and those that linger longest are the daily acts of kindness, and the kindly smile of the Christian Mother. She gave unselfishly of her time to her home and loved ones. In June 1925 she united with the Wolfe Creek Baptist Church and became a faithful follower of Christ, last fall she moved to Waveland and resided there until her death. Only a few days ago, she came to visit her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Smith. She had looked forward to this event with happy anticipations as she had planned to attend the Revival Services at the Byron Christian Church. She attended these meetings and expressed her joy and appreciation of mingling again with the old neighbors and friends in Christian fellowship. What a beautiful and fitting close for life of this Christian Mother. And in the words of the poet, her faith was a beacon leading her to the Life Beyond, for, "I have read of bright mansions in heaven, which the Savior has gone to prepare, and the Saints who on earth have been faithful, Rest forever with Christ over there."

Notes from Karen Zach:
Family tradition says that Amanda Barker Morgan made many pies each day, they ate a pie apiece with breakfast as well as breakfast, a pie apiece for lunch (as well as lunch) and a pie apiece for supper (as well as supper), they ate the pie first, as they so loved dessert. Joe would say, "Ya' gotta' eat the pie first; else you might not have room for it!" My grandmother (Hazel Morgan Smith) met my grandfather, Carl Smith, at a box social where he bought her basket, as much for the thought of tasting one of her mother's delicious and very famous pies as for her prettiness, the problem was there was only ONE kind of pie he hated, luck had it he got the dreaded coconut cream, but he got the girl and that made up for it, I guess!
