Mrs. Mary Ray Minnick, aged 99 years and almost 4 months died Friday night Dec 6, 1957 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Lee Foster, east of Rob Roy. She was the widow of Frank Minnick and had lived throughout her long and loved life in Richland, Van Buren and Shawnee Townships. “Aunt Mary” as she was known to her legion of friends was bright and cheerful all of her years and still so on the occasions of her 98th and 99th birthdays but was more delicate on that later anniversary than formerly and had been seriously ill for the last three weeks. Even at her 98th birthday in 1956 and afterward she occasionally baked bread in which she took much pride. Her last words were quite and she herself crossed her arms across her breast at the last moment and passed so easily her loved children scarcely knew it. Mrs. Minnick was born on a farm east of Mellott in Richland Township on Aug 7, 1858 daughter of Jefferson and Alice Ray attended the local schools and learned the tasks and pleasures of a farm girl in those still near pioneer times. She was an auburn-haired girl – the color had turn to snow white in later years – very active, vivacious and mentally bright one who could ride the most spirited horses. On Aug 18, 1875 she was married to Frank Minnick a son of Simon Minnick who was one of the early settlers in Van Buren Township. They farmed near Veedersburg in their later years occupying the Minnick homestead north of Veedersburg on US Highway 41 where Mr. Minnick died on July 6, 1926. Surviving her and her husband are the daughter Mrs. Lena Foster and two sons, Leighton and Lowell Minnick, both of Veedersburg. An elder son, Murry died in infancy. “Aunt Mary” was held in such high regard that on Sunday afternoon more than 450 friends and old neighbors visited the J Fred Parham Funeral Home in Veedersburg. There the funeral service was conducted Monday by the Rev. Guy Walters, formerly of Mellott with interment taking place in the Osborn Prairie Cemetery alongside the church where Mrs. Minnick had been a member for many years. – kbz
