MILLIGAN, Sanford

Source: Covington Republican Friday 5 February 1922 p1

The lifeless body of Sanford Milligan, a resident of Pine Village was found lodged in the river at the south end of Lafayette Friday evening by Francis and Frank Winters, fishermen. The men noticed an object hanging from the limb of a willow tree that stands about 15’ from the present shore line and upon investigation discovered it was the body of a man. The identity of Milligan remained a mystery until noon Saturday when James Parton reviewed the remains and identified Milligan. The man was about 70 years old and was a retired farmer. He went to Lafayette early last week and had been stopping at the Travelers’ Inn.  Just when or where he met his death is not known.  He was not known to be despondent and his friends could not account for his death by drowning in the Wabash River.  When the body was found it was suspended from the limb of a willow tree. The coat had washed over the head and legs and shoulders were under water. - kbz
