MILLER, Inez (Miss)

Source: Attica-Fountain-Warren-Democrat-Nov 23, 1922 p 3

Miss Inez Miller, cashier in the Fountain Produce Co offices at Veedersburg took her own life Wednesday at noon of last week.  Miss Miller did not go home for dinner but remained at the office supposedly to study as was her custom as she was carrying a number of high school studies, expected to graduate from Veedersburg HS next June.  Joseph Holmes who is employed by the same company returned to the company offices before one o’clock expecting to read the papers before time to go to work. When he entered the office he found Miss Miller lying on the floor.  Thinking she had fainted, he went to her and tried to arouse her. His efforts proved futile. She was then breathing heavy and he called other employees to the office and then summoned two physicians. They saw that the symptoms indicated poisoning and when they began to use the stomach pump they soon detected the odor of carbolic acid. The drug had done its deadly work and Miss Miller died while the doctors were working with her.  Miss Miller was 18 years old, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Miller of Sterling, a suburb of Veedersburg. On account of the failing in health of her father she did not return to school this fall, as she felt she should work and help support the family, but she studied at evenings and at noon hour and other odd moments, trying to keep up her high school work.  WA Holmes, manager of the Fountain Produce Co. at Veedersburg where Miss Miller was employed stated that of late he had noticed that Miss Miller had seemed unhappy.  It is thought that overwork and worry over the condition of her father’s health is responsible for the young woman’s rash act.  She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Miller and two sisters – Miss Belle Miller of Lafayette and Miss Dee Miller who is still at home in Sterling. The funeral was conducted at 10 o’clock Saturday forenoon at Sterling. – kbz
