VEEDERSBURG — Miss Edith Miller, 79, retired Veedersburg school teacher, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lakeview Hospital at Danville, Ill., where she was taken Monday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage last Thursday. She had been a primary teacher 50 years, 48 of them in this community. Miss Miller also taught a year at Lafayette and a year at Stone Bluff. She retired in 1949, having taught three generations in several families. Born here Sept. 8, 1878, she was a daughter of Frank and Lucinda Hale Miller. She was an 1896 graduate of Veedersburg High School and attended Indiana State Normal, Valparaiso University and Blaker's Teachers College at Indianapolis. Miss Miller was the first local teacher to retire under the Indiana teachers retirement system. She was a member of the local First Christian Church since a girl of 16. At the time of her death she had been a member of this church longer than any other. Miss Miller also was a member and served as Worthy Matron of Valetta Chapter of OES and was a past regent of the DAR in this community. She was active in such civic affairs as the American Red Cross and public library. Survivors include a brother, Hugh Miller, with whom she made her home, and a niece, Mrs. Mary Lou Mills of Veedersburg. The body is at the J. Fred Parham Funeral Home here. VEEDERSBURG — Funeral services for Miss Edith Miller, whose death occurred at Lake View Hospital in Danville, Ill., following a stroke, were held Friday afternoon at the J. Fred Parham Funeral Home with Rev. George Mitchell, pastor of the Christian Church, officiating. Piano selections, favorites of the deceased, were Played by Mrs. Grace Marshall. Pallbearers were Robert Patton, Lloyd Ellis, William Goings, Forrest Mitchell, Arthur Boggs, Darrell Fisher, Cyrus Van Devanter ; and Kenneth Cade. Burial was in Rockfield Cemetery. Miss Miller was a teacher in the Veedersburg area for nearly 50 years prior to her retirement in 1949.

Miss Edith MILLER, 79, who spent nearly half a century teaching in the Veedersburg Grade School died at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lake View Hospital, Danville, as a result of a cerebral lesion suffered on the previous Thursday March 6. She never regained consciousness after the attack. She taught first, second and even third generation pupils of Veedersburg primary pupils of Veedersburg primary grade until her retirement in 1949. She was a native of Veedersburg and in frail health at times for some years had been under the care of Dr. CB McCord. Miss Miller was a member of the first graduating class of Veedersburg HS in 1896, a class of 12 members, the other three girls still survive. She began teaching in 1898 at Stone Bluff but the next year taught in Veedersburg and for most of those years since until retirement. One year she taught in the Lafayette schools and then returned to Veedersburg to teach. In October 1956 after a fall at her home and due to other weaknesses, she became a bed patient and remained so most of the time until stricken last week. Edith Camilla Miller was born in Veedersburg on Sept 8, 1878, the daughter of Frank Miller, a native of Montezuma who opened the first store in Veedersburg and became the town’s first druggist in 1872. Her mother was Lucinda Eleanor Hale, daughter of Dr. Justus Hale, a native of Sangerfield, NY and a pioneer physician of Parke County. She prepared for teaching at Indiana State Teacher’s College at Terre Haute and Valparaiso University and also received special primary training at Madame Blaker’s School in Indianapolis. She was member of the Veedersburg Christian Church since age 16 and that church was the center of her devotions. She attended regularly many years and taught Sunday School for the greater part of that time. She also was a member of Valetta Chapter No 27 of the Eastern Star since age 18 and was a past worthy matron of the chapter. She was a charter member of the Veedersburg Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and one of its former regents and also a charter member of the Theta Nu Chi Club. In her more active years she was a Red Cross officer and likewise was interested in library and other civic groups. She is survived by one brother, Hugh Miller, his wife, Margaret and a niece, Mrs. Frank Mills and three Mills children all of Veedersburg. Her numerous former pupils and friend have often united in acknowledging her to have been the finest teacher they had known. Funeral services were held this Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Parham Funeral Home with Rev. George Mitchell, pastor of the First Christian Church officiating.
