Charles F. Miller, 79, a widely known educator, died at his home in Hillsboro on Wednesday evening, June 12 after two years illness from a heart ailment. Born Jan. 11, 1867, in Richland township son of James P. and Elmira Shroyer Miller. He was married to Miss Rose Wood at the home of her parents in Hillsboro, on Sept. 7, 1892. He began his educational career when a young man as a teacher in the Fountain county schools. He was superintendent of the city schools of Nappanee for 14 years. In 1926 he was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction, taking his office in 1927. He resigned before his term expired, to become superintendent of City Schools in Indianapolis. Mr. Miller was a life member of the National Education Association; of Indiana School Men’s Club and Northern Indiana School Men’s Club, He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Ft. Wayne of the Masonic Lodge of Goshen; the Columbia Club, Indianapolis and of the Central Avenue Methodist church of Indianapolis. Survivors are the widow; one son, Dr. Douglas W. Miller, acting Dean of Journalism of Syracuse, New York, who has been on leave of absence doing educational work for the U. S. Army in France and Germany. He is enroute home and is expected to arrive in New York by June 15. A grandson, Lt. Bruce M. Miller, of the U. S. Army located in Japan, also survives. = kz
