NEWTOWN — Leah A. Royal Middleton, 92, formerly of Newtown, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000 in South Suburban Hospital, Hazelcrest, Ill. She was born April 15, 1907 in Richland Township, Fountain County, the daughter of Walter and Verona Meeker Royal. She married Ora Hill who preceded in death in 1942. In 1944 she married Bruce W. Middleton who preceded in death in 1979. She graduated from Newtown High School, Danville Central College and received her master's degree in education from Purdue University. She formerly lived in Westfield before moving to Homewood, Ill. in 1944. She taught in the Fountain County school system before teaching in the elementary school for many years in Flossmoor, Ill. She was a member of the Cook County Daughters of the American Revolution and had served as chaplain for many years. She was a member and had held many state offices for the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Cool County Extension Homemakers, Newtown Chapter of Order of Eastern Star, Union Christian Church near Newtown and the Homewood Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed creative writing and her cats. Survivors include: nieces, Jane Kerr Hartman, Newtown and Lisa Karen Hartman, Lafayette; and nephews, John Guy, Jackson, Mich. and Robert Royal, Crawfordsville. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Wreatha Royal Kerr and Hazel Royal Guy; two brothers, Halbert and Carl Royal; two nieces, Karen Kerr Whitworth and Edwina Guy Sheehan; and a nephew, James Guy. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday in Maus Funeral Home, Attica. Burial was in Newtown Cemetery. – jlr
