COVINGTON — Richard Gene
Merryman, 80, Indianapolis, died at 4:14 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2006 in
Community Hospital North in Indianapolis. He was born July 4, 1926 in
Covington, the only child of Paul C. and Phynus (Smith) Merryman. He married
Alberta Lucille Willis of Winslow on Nov. 4, 1950. She preceded in death Feb.
11, 1996. He graduated from Covington High School in 1944. He was a veteran of
the Pacific in World War II and also served in the Korean War as the officer in
charge of the United Nations Cemetery. He graduated from the Indiana College of
Mortuary Science in 1949 and operated Merryman Funeral Home in Attica. He
retired from Chrysler after 28 years, working as a metallurgical laboratory
supervisor. He and his father jointly became members of Fountain Lodge #60 F.
& A.M. in Covington, Scottish Rite and Murat Shine in 1948. He was also a
member of the Attica Fire Department and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post
#360 in Mishawaka, and a continuing member of the Moose Lodge #17. He is
survived by a son, Allan Merryman, Bolinas, Calif. Gravesite services will be
at 11 a.m. Thursday in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. Shelby Funeral Home,
Covington, is in charge of arrangements. –
