New Richmond -- Virgil C. Meritt, 72, died at 1 p.m. Thursday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville. He had been a patient there since suffering a heart attack last Saturday at his home about five miles south of here. Mr. Meritt, who had farmed for more than 50 years, was manager of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office, which is located in the Dawson Building in Crawfordsville. He was a member of the Liberty Chapel Church of which he was treasurer, the New Richmond Masonic Lodge No. 604, Kiwanis Club, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis and was a charter member of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He was a former county and township present of the Farm Bureau. He also sang with the Olin Quartet. Born July 26, 1888, in Fountain County, he was a son of John M. and Margaret Snyder Meritt. He was married Sept. 12, 1910, in Elmdale, to Grace Olin. Survivors include the widow; a son, Eugene Meritt of Rt. 1 New Richmond; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Julia Meritt of Kokomo and Mrs. Ilene Meritt of Rt. 1 New Richmond; a foster daughter, Imogene Sheets of Parkersburg; a foster son, Eugene Haase of California; a sister, Mrs. John Hanson of Hammond and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Olin Meritt, who died last March 8. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (EST) Sunday at Servies Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Harold Clark officiating, assisted by Rev. Guy Tremaine. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery north of Elmdale. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 7 p.m. (EST) to 9 o’clock Friday and from 2 p.m. to 9 o’clock Saturday.
