Waynetown - William S. Merrell, 88, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday in the Ben Hur Nursing Home at Crawfordsville. He was born in Wayne Township Feb 10, 1878 a son of Basil T. and Nancy N. Bunnell Merrell. He was married to Maude Estella Lewis June 23, 1897 at the bride's home near here. A member of the Waynetown Baptist Church, he had been choir director, trustee and deacon.
Mr. Merrell had farmed in Wayne Township all his adult life and was a member of the Wayne Township Farm Bureau. A graduate of Waynetown HS he had played in the Newtown-Waynetown band.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Blanche M. Bolling of River Forest, Ill and Mrs. Rhoda N. Harzell of Beech Grove; twin sons, Judge Morris T. Merrell of Evansville and Marx D. Merrell a teacher at Howe Military Academy; 17 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Freeman of Crawfordsville and nieces and nephews. Mr. Merrell was predeceased by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Jett; three sons, Lewis Merrell, Dr. Paul Merrell and Dr. Basil Merrell; two brothers, Alfred D. Merrell; two brothers, Alfred D. Merrell and Clarence F. Merrell and two sisters, Mrs. Stella Boldt and Mrs. Etta Munns.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday here at Servies Funeral Home with Rev. Myron Hinton officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. - kbz
