JOHN MELLOTT, one of the best known men of Fountain county and the man whom the town of Mellott was named for, died very suddenly at his home in Mellott Friday evening. He had been in his usual health during the day and made no complaint of ill health, on retiring Mrs. Mellott spoke to her husband and receiving no answer discovered that he was dead.
The deceased was about seventy five years old and had spent almost all of his life in Mellott. He is survived by a wife and a son; W. T. Mellott, of Sullivan, Ind.
Deceased was born in Randolph county but came to this county with his family in 1865 and lived for a short time in Attica. They soon moved on a farm southwest of Newtown and acquired in time considerable land there.
In time he helped found the town of Mellott where the Clover Leaf crossed the Range Road between Hillsboro and Newtown. He was in the hardware business and had the post office there for many years and retired a year ago on account of failing health. – thanks to S&E
