Attica, Ind -- Mrs. Esther Burghardt Meharry, 85, of 402 E. Washington died at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Jan 29, 1973) in Williamsport Community Hospital. She had been a patient for 10 days. Born June 16, 1887 in Romney, she was the daughter of Henrich and Margaret Balser Burghardt. In June of 1908 at Romney, she married Charles Leo Meharry. They farmed for a number of years with a primary interest in raising soybeans and lespedeza. This interest took them on many trips throughout the nation during the war years. They were one of the first to raise soybeans. He preceded her in death in 1937 (sic). From 1933 to 1937, they resided in Tolono, Ill. Most of the remainder of the time, they resided in Attica. She was a graduate of Romney schools and Purdue University class of 1907. She taught school one year. Mrs. Meharry was a member of First United Methodist Church of Attica, Monday Club, Tri Kappa and Methodist Guild. Survivors include Mrs. George (Elizabeth) Newlin of Columbus Ind and 5 grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Friends will be received at the family residence after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be at 11 a.m. EST Thursday at First United in Attica with Rev. Vernon Lallament officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before services. Burial will be in Meharry Cemetery near Wingate. The family has requested any memorials be in the form of contribution to the Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a favorite chairty.
