A Veedersburg resident was crushed to death Tuesday afternoon while working in Chicago.

Mannon Meeker, 47, apparently was killed instantly when a large piece of metal fell on him and pinned him to the ground.
He was working as a steel cutter with a wrecking firm at the time of the accident. The accident occurred shortly after noon on a project in a suburb of Chicago.

Relatives here Tuesday night said complete details of Meeker’s death were not yet known. He had been employed with the wrecking company for several years.

His widow, Leota, received word of her husband’s death in a phone call from Chicago Tuesday afternoon.
Meeker was born near Veedersburg Oct. 25, 1902. He was the son of Holford and Lura Lively Meeker. After attending school here, he later married Miss Leota Phillips.

Surviving are the widow; five children, Patricia of Michigan City and Kathleen Shigley, Lura and Jack, all of Veedersburg; his father, who now lives at Walkerton; a sister, Mrs. Vivian Hileman of Michigan City; and three brothers, George Meeker of Minneapolis, Minn., Ross Meeker of Veedersburg and Gordon Meeker of Plymouth.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed. However, the body will be returned to the J. Fred Parham Funeral Home here. – thanks to S&E
