Source: The obituary is from a collection by Fauniel Hershberger, saved the 1950's, 60's and 70's. She was a life long resident of Fountain County Indiana.  The collection is now housed at Crawfordsville District Public Library.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a. m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Fifth St. Church of Christ for Mrs. Mattie Shields Maxey, age 76, of 919 Jefferson St., who died Wednesday, Aug. 30, in a hospital in Macomb, Ill. She had been visiting near Macomb with a daughter, Mrs. Winifred Horney. Roger James, pastor of the Fifth St. Church of Christ, officiated. Burial was in Davis Cemetery at Fairmount, Ill., with the Hegg Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were: Chester Powell, Ted Hardy, Dale Thomas, Roy Rogers, Earl Allison and Richard Lewsader. Mrs. Maxey was born near Hillsboro, Ky., the daughter of W. L. and Mahala Shields. She was married at Mt. Sterling. Ky., in 1905 to Thomas Luther Maxey, who preceded her in death in 1959. Mrs. Maxey was a former resident of Fairmount, Ill., and was a member of the Fifth St. Church of Christ. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Horney, Mrs. Dolores Louck of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Sally Maddox of Fairmount, Ill., and Mrs. Norma Piatt of Monticello, Ill.; two sons, Carlyn Maxey of Veedersburg Rt. 2; and P. K. Maxey of San Jose, Calif.; and three brothers, Albert of Kenney, Ill., Erwin of Danville, Ill., and Harvey K. of Fairmount. She was preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and a son.  --typed by Walt W

Mrs. Mattie Shields Maxey, 76, of 1919 Jefferson St. in Covington, died, Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1961, at a hosipital in Malcomb, Ill.  She had been visiting with a daughter, Mrs. Winifred Homey, of Smithshire, Ill.
Born near Hillsboro, Ky., she was the daughter of W. L. and Mahala Shields.  She was married at Mt. Sterling, Ky., in 1905 to Thomas Luthern Maxey, who preceded her in death in 1959.  She was a member of the 5th St. Church of Christ.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Horney, Mrs. Deloris Louck of Peoria, Mrs. Sally Maddox of Fairmount and Mrs. Norma Hiatt of Monticello, Ind.; two sons, Carl of Veedersburg Route 2 and P. K. Maxey of San Jose, Calif., and three brothers, Harvey of Fairmount, Ervin of Danville and Albert of Kinney.
She also was preceded in death by, three brothers and a sister.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the 5th St. Church of Christ in Covington.  Burial was in Fairmount, Illinois cemetery. - jz
