Bert Mason, young Covington attorney, died suddenly at his home in Covington Monday morning at 10 o’clock following a heart attack about 8 o’clock that same morning. He was 35. He had been ill since early March at which time he suffered a heart attack but it was believed that his recovery had been sufficient that he planned to return to his law duties with the Wallace, Wallace and Mason firm the morning he died. Bert was a capable and popular young man and his untimely death came as a shock to his many friends throughout the county. He was born Dec 11, 1921 at Cannelton, Indiana a son of Bert and Elsie Richey Mason. He was a graduate of Valparaiso University and served three years in the Marine Corps in World War II. He was married to Beverly Servies of Covington in 1945 and he joined the Wallace & Wallace law firm in 1951. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Covington Library Board, Fountain County Bar Association, the Phi Alpha Dela Fraternity, the Conservation Club and was president of the Valparaiso University Lawyers Association. Surviving is the wife, twin sons, Jeff and David; a daughter, Jill and a brother, Maurice of Hebron, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the Covington Methodist Church with burial in Mt. Hope. Masonic and military rites were conducted at the cemetery. – kbz
