MARTIN, Ransom Laymon

Ransom Laymon Martin, 74, who lived alone on a farm south of State Highway 32, southeast of Hillsboro, drowned Friday night when he jumped into a well near his home. He was pronounced dead by Fountain County Coroner Ralph Nelson at 10 p.m. Fountain County Sheriff George Cruea, stated that Martin took his own life. A note was left on the kitchen table naming his pall bearers and where they would find the body.
Richard Kirts, a tenant farmer on Martin's land, had taken some milk to Martin about 8:30 p.m. He told, investigating officers that he became suspicious of the way Martin was acting, and returned to the farm an hour later, and found the note on the table.
The Hillsboro fire department was called to the scene and pumped the water out of the well where they, found Martin's body, clad in underwear, at the bottom of the well.
He was born in July, 1887, in Clinton, the son of Vonley and Margaret Myler Martin. Was a member of the Alamo Christian Church.
Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Anna Cole, of Kokomo and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Charles Martin and a sister, Mrs. Addie White.
Funeral service was held at the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown with burial in Wolf Creek Cemetery. - jz
