Nora Payne, daughter of Wm. And Alice Reed Payne, was born near Tell City, Perry County, Indiana, May 31, 1886, departed this life August 10, 1944. She was one of five children, three of whom have preceded her in death; two brothers and one sister. She fitted herself as a teacher and later taught in Parke County. She united with the Farmers Chapel United Brethren Church while teaching at Ferndale, Ind. She was united in marriage to Garfield Martin of near Ferndale on August 16, 1905. The following year they moved to the John Greer farm in the New Discovery neighborhood. They later purchased the farm and here was born their daughter, Marjorie, to whom she was a devoted and loving mother. She loved her home and was always ready and anxious to do a kindness to others or help someone in need. She took an active part in work of the New discovery Baptist Church, serving as president of the Missionary Circle and has been the very efficient secretary and treasure of the Ladies Aid Society of the church for many years, always ready to do her part in every department.
She also took an active interest in civic affairs holding several responsible positions. She served as social and educational leader in the Adams Township Farm Bureau and was a member of the New Discovery Home Economics Club. She was recently elected to serve a two year term as secretary of the Parke County Federation of Clubs.
Her gong away is a sore trial and we shall miss her greatly. But our loss is her eternal gain.
She leaves to mourn, her husband, Garfield, and daughter, Mrs. Howard Wills of Rushville, Indiana, her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Payne of Rockville, her sister, Mrs. Lloyd Shelton, also of Rockville and one niece, Mrs. Camilla Shelton Bradfield of Rockville and many other relatives and friends. -s-
