The many friends of Mrs. Lucy Martin of this city, were terribly shocked and grieved on Sunday morning when the news of her sudden death was flashed from home to home. Her death occured about five o'clock in the morning following a very brief illness. She had not been feeling well for several days but her condition was not considered serious at all. About midnight her husband was awakended by her groans, and realizing that she was very sick, he summoned a physician. She never regained consciousness, however, and passed away in a few hours. Lucy Martin was one of the well known and beloved women of the community where she resided for a lifetime. She was born in Effingham, Ill., Aug. 21, 1848 being in her 66th year. Forty years ago she was married to Samuel Martin, a veteran of the Civil War. For forty years she lived with him, sharing his joys and sorrows, and rearing a family of three fine children. Mr. Martin is now on feeble health, patiently awaiting the last bugle call. During the past year, their home on E. Pearl street, which they occupied for many years, was completely remodeled and all modern improvements installed and these fine old people were preparing to spend the remainder of their days in peace and happiness. The entire community grieves sorely for the sorrowing husband and children. The children are John E. Martin, an employee of the C & E.I. R.R. shops in Danville, Ill., Mrs. Emma Groves, of Terra Haute, and Mrs. C.E. Doane, of this city. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home, a large number of friends attending. Dr. H.K. Fox officiated at the service and the few surviving members of the G.A.R. and the W.R.C. attended in a body. Interment was made in Mt Hope cemetery. Three sisters, Mrs. Nettie Jeffries, of Marshall, Ill., Mrs. Addie Taylor and Mrs. Amelia Korne of Terra Haute and one brother, Oscar Cole, of Robinson, Ill., were here to attend the funeral.
