COVINGTON -- Dr. James P. Martin, 82, a dentist in Covington for 54 years, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 2, 1977) at his home in Covington. He had been ill several years. Dr. Martin started in practice with his father in 1923 following his graduation from Indiana University Dental College. He had been a resident of Covington since 1900. Born Nov. 25, 1894, in Winchester, Ind., he was the son of Edward James and Ella Musetta Plannette Martin. He was married in Nashville, Ind., in 1944 to Frances Dale Edwards, who survives. Dr. Martin graduated from Covington High in 1913 and attended Wabash College before entering dental college. He was a member of the alumni of Indiana University Dental College, a life member of the Indiana Dental Association and a member of Phi Omega Dental Fraternity. He also was a member of the District Ben Hur Association at Crawfordsville, a past master of Fountain Masonic Lodge 60, Fountain County Past Masters Association, Troy Chapter 145 Order of Eastern Star and Tidal Lodge 36 Knights of Pythias. Dr. Martin also served as a member of the Covington City Council for two terms. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Hickman of Bloomington; two sons, James E. of Indianapolis and Thomas W. at home; a stepson, George Edwards of Covington; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Charlene Gregory of Reno, Nev., and Mrs. Audrey Fairchild of Indianapolis; two brothers, Rudolph of Mt. Ayre, N.C., and Edward R. of Covington Route 1; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Boggs of Sarasota, Fla., Mrs. Musetta Robb of Covington and Mrs. Kathryn French of Salvang, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Sunday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert H. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends will be received after 2 p.m. EST Saturday at the funeral home. Masonic memorial services will be there at 8 p.m. EST Saturday. - jlr
