HAMMOND — Carter H. Martin, 87, Hammond, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 in Community Hospital, Munster. He was born Aug. 13, 1912 in Williamsport, the son of Ele Lewis and Pearl Carter Martin. His wife of 64 years, Olive, survives. He had been a resident of the Calument area for 63 years. He was a graduate of Wabash College, class of 1934. He retired in 1975 after 38 1/2 years as a supervisor in #2 open hearth and #4 BOF at the Inland Steel Co. He was a 50-year member of Covenant Presbyterian Church of Hessville where he served as elder and currently was an elder emeritus. He was a member of the Inland Steel Management Club and 25-year club, a former employee of Woodmar Country Club Pro Shop, member of the Northwest Indiana Coalition for Literacy and Calumet Area Literacy Council, and a member of the Greater Wabash Foundation, Hammond Historical Society and A.A.R.P. Survivors, besides the wife, include: a daughter, Pamela (Richard) Gragg, Sacremento, Calif.; a brother, Dr. Robert E. Martin, West Lebanon; a sister, Kate (Duane) Steward, Fort Wayne; and a sister-in-law, Fern Martin, Grand Junction, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Forrest and Chester Martin. Funeral services were at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Bocken Funeral Home, Hammond (Hessville). Gravesite services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. – jlr
