Newtown — Violet Lane Mapes, 78, of Newtown, died unexpectedly at 11:15 p.m. Saturday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville, where she had been a patient since Thursday. Mrs. Mapes had been a Newtown resident the past 47 years and was a member of Newtown Baptist Church. She had previously resided in Sidel, Ill., and Marion, Ohio. Born near Goodland on Nov. 24, 1893, she was a daughter of Tilman and Rose Solomon Richardson. She was married in Danville, Ill., on Feb. 4, 1914, to Earl E. Mapes who was a farmer and agricultural lime dealer before his retirement. Survivors include the husband; a son, Herschel of Rt. 1, Wingate; a daughter, Mrs. Aaron (Bernice) Kemble of Newtown; two brothers, Tilman R. Richardson of Newman, Ill., and Russell Richardson of Ashley, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Fern Martin of Danville, Ill., Mrs. Garnet Loop of Chrisman, Ill., Mrs. Fannie Diller of Romeo, Mich., and Mrs. Nellie Gaede of Palm Springs, Calif.; a half-brother, Eugene Richardson of California; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded m death by two sisters and one brother. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Newtown Baptist Church with Rev. David Fuller and Rev. George Phelps officiating. The body will lie in state in the church one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Old Baptist Cemetery west of Newtown.
