Thomas S. Mapes, 83 years old died Friday morning at the home of a son, Earl Mapes, at Newton. He had been ill 9 weeks. The body was removed to the Crumley & Son Funeral Home in Covington and then returned to the Earl Mapes home where funeral services were held at 10:30 o'clock Sunday morning. The Rev. JE Fry of Attica was in charge of the service and Omer Pevler and Mrs. Francis Foxworthy sang, accompanied by Mrs. Pevler. The body was then taken to the Jeanes Funeral Home at St. Joseph, Illinois where Rev. Fry conducted the service at 2 o'clock that afternoon. Burial was in Patterson Cemetery at St. Joseph. Born Jan 25, 1860, at St. Joseph, Ill the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Swarington Mapes, he was married October 26, 1879, so Samaria McElwee, who preceded him in death in 1935. Mr. Mapes was a member of the Church of Christ in St. Joseph and had resided in Newtown since 1920, moving to Newtown from Fithian, Illinois. Besides the son at whose home he died, three children, Mrs. Elizabeth White of Danville, Ill; Leonard Mapes of Covington and Harvey Mapes of Hillsboro; 18 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren survive.
