Baxter Springs, Kan., Sept. 5 - Mrs. Sarah E. Mapes, 89 years old, died at 5 o'clock this afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Fred Bartlett, 1043 Park avenue, after suffering a heart attack yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Mapes had been in ill health for the last two years. Born in Attica, Ind., Mrs. Mapes lived in Baxter Springs 47 years, coming here from St. Paul, Kan. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Assembly of God church. Surviving are another daughter, Mrs. Don Fenton of Baxter Springs; three sons, John M. Swank of Prophetstown, Ill., Ed S. Mapes of Los Angeles, and Ellsworth Mapes of Siloam Springs, Ark; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Hoskins-Wene funeral home.
