Newtown -- Earl Mapes, 82 of Newtown died at 11 a.m. Thursday in Woodland Manor nursing Home at Attica. He had been ill 4 months. He was a retired farmer and had been employed as an agricultural lime distributor. Mr. Mapes was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church at Newtown and had lived in the Newtown area 50 years. Born June 4, 1893 at Fithian, Ill, he was a son of Thomas S. and Samyra Jane McElwee Mapes. He was married to Violet Richardson Feb 4, 1914. She died Jan 29, 1972. Surviving are a son, Herschel of Rt 1, Wingate; a daughter, Mrs. Aaron (Bernice) Kemble of Newtown; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hopewell Baptist Church at Newtown with Rev. David Fuller and Rev. Donald Watson officiating. Burial in Old Baptist Cemetery west of Newtown. The body will lie in state in the church one hour prior to the service. Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home at Attica 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.
