Clarence E. Mann, 79, chairman of the board of the Schwab Safe Co. and former president of the firm, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital at 7:45 a.m. Saturday. He suffered a stroke while driving his car five weeks ago and had been a patient in the hospital since then. The family home is 45 N. Salisbury St., West Lafayette. Mr. Mann had been associated with the Schwab company for 46 years. He became general manager in 1927 and was elected to the presidency after the death of Elmer W. Memering in 1961. Taking semi-retirement in 1963, he retired from the presidency of the concern but was elected chairman of the board of directors. Born in Warren County, he attended Warren County schools and received the B.A. degree from Central Normal College, Danville, in 1912 and the M.A. degree from Indiana University in 1917. In his early life he was a schoolteacher in Warren and Shelby Counties and also engaged in farming in Warren County. He also was principal of West Lafayette High School in 1918-19. Mr. Mann was married to Clara Timmons at Logansport in 1911. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of West Lafayette, Green Hill Masonic Lodge 455, Order of Eastern Star Chapter 507 of West Lafayette, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Lafayette Shrine Club. Surviving with the widow are two daughters, Mrs. Wayne L. Dunlap of East Lansing, Mich., and Mrs. William Wentling of Dayton, Ohio; four brothers, Jacob and Floyd of Lafayette, Luther of Newtown and Raymond of Fort Wayne, and a sister, Mrs. Harley Misner of West Lafayette. NEWTOWN — Funeral services for Clarence Mann, age 79, a retired Lafayette businessman and former resident of Newtown, were held Monday, June 28, at the Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette. He died Saturday, June 26. Mr. Mann was born in 1886 in Warren County, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Central Normal College in 1912 and a master of arts degree at Indiana University in 1917. He was a school teacher and farmer in Warren County and served as principal of West Lafayette High School from 1912 to 1919. He was chairman of the board of Schwab Co. Survivors include: the widow, Clara Timmons Mann, whom he married in 1911; two daughters; one sister; four brothers, including Luther of Newtown; five grandsons and two-great-grandsons.   --typed by Walt W
