Mrs. Mary Gertrude Mallett, 78, of Covington, Ind., Route 2, died at 6:40 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 30, 1965) in Lake View Memorial. She had been a patient 16 days, and in ill health approximately a year. She also had been hospitalized last spring. She resided with her son, Reagan and his wife, Hazel. As a young girl, Mrs. Mallet enjoyed ice skating on the Wabash River at Covington. Later, she often played the organ. Her home burned twice during her childhood. Mrs. Mallett was fond of dancing, and liked to "glide to a beautiful waltz." Too, she believed a "married couple should dance only with each other . . . That's just the way it ought to be." She first met her husband, the late John Mallett, at a church supper. "He took me home in his horse and buggy. Those were delightful times,” she often said. Known as "a worker," she also took pride in garden work. She remembered the days of lace-up corsets and "how my waist was so small my husband could circle his hands about it." He preceded her in death in 1937. In recent winters, she vacationed in Florida with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mabel Haas of Cory, Ind. Her father, John Fields, met the challenge of the air age by taking his first plane ride on his 90th birthday, piloted by his grandson, Jack McIntosh. Mrs. Mallett disliked wars, and feared events would lead yet to another major one. A frequent Bible reader, her favorite was Psalms, Chapter 1: A blessed man shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. She attended Danville High School, and was a member of Benson Chapel Methodist Church and its Woman's Society of Christian Women. Born Aug. 26, 1886, in Warren County, Ind., she was a daughter of John and Rachael Henderson Fields. On Feb. 15, 1908, she was married in Danville to John Mallett. Survivors include two sons, Reagan, Covington Route 2, Howard, Danville; three granddaughters with whom she lived, Mrs. Sue Rick, Covington Route 2, Mrs. Barbara Ropp, Indianapolis, and Joanne, at home; two great-grandsons; a sister, Mrs. Ida Hacker, Logansport, Ind. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Body is at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home, Covington. Services will be at 1 p.m. EST Tuesday at Benson Chapel Methodist Church, near Covington, the Rev. Ralph Allen, officiating.
