VEEDERSBURG, Ind. -- An auto-train crash at the unmarked State Street and Norfolk and Western Railroad crossing at 7:20 last night took the life of a 55-year-old Veedersburg foundry worker. Noral MacGirvin, Veedersburg Route 3, died at 10:15 p.m. in St. Elizabeth's Hospital of massive internal injuries. Mac Girvin's auto was struck in the right rear by the train. The auto was spun around twice and Mac Girvin was thrown about 15 feet to the pavement. The train was reported to be traveling about 35 miles per hour. Charles Records Jr. of Charleston, Ill. was the engineer and Ralph Silence of Frankfort, Ind. the conductor. Indiana state trooper Lloyd Jennings reported the blacktopped street was snow-packed and slippery. Jennings was assisted by the Fountain County sheriff's department and the Veedersburg city police. Born Feb. 16, 1912, at Sterling, Colo., he was the son of J. F. and Mary Stipp MacGirvin. He had resided in Wabash Township in Fountain County for four years and had farmed most of his life. Survivors include his father, with whom he resided; two sisters, Mrs. Salley McArdle of Lookeba, Okla., and Mrs. Belva Whitlock of Danville; two nieces and a nephew. Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Sunday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. Gale McKinley will officiate. Burial will be in Lower Mound Ceme  -- typed by Walt W

VEEDERSBURG - A Rt. l, Covington, man became Fountain County's first fatality of 1968 after the auto he was driving was struck by a train and thrown 90 feet from the point of impact. Fifty-five-year-old Noral MacGirvin died about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, a little over three hours after the accident occurred. MacGirvin was taken unconscious to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., with a broken clavicle, internal bleeding and kidney puncture. MacGirvin was struck by a Norfolk & Western train at the State street crossing by the Fountain County Highway Garage about 7:30 p.m. State Police reported the accident occurred on a snow-packed area and the train was traveling 35 miles an hour. The crossing was marked only with cross-bars. MacGirvin was driving a 1955 model vehicle. He was thrown from the auto. Little damage was received by the train, which was on its regular run from Charleston, Ill., to Frankfort, Ind. Crewmen, uninjured, were identified as Charles Record Jr. of Frankfort, engineer, and Ralph Silence of Charleston, conductor. - jlr
