Gary Francis, 14-year-old Veedersburg school student was killed, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Francis were badly injured in a head-on collision on US. 136 last Saturday afternoon about 4:30.
Also injured was William Allen Jr., of Hillsboro, the driver of the other car involved.
Gary was pronounced dead upon arrival at the St. Elizabeth Hosp. The father, Gene, suffered severe lacerations and an eye injury, a fractured ankle and fractured hip; the mother, Jane, suffered a multiple fracture of the upper leg. Both will be hospitalized for several weeks at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville.
Mr. Allen was taken to the Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville where he suffered from shock, cuts and bruises. He was dismissed on Sunday but was re-admitted on Tuesday for further care.
The accident occurred on a straight stretch of U.S. 136 about a mile east of Sunny Inn and practically in front of the J. E. Padgett farm home. The Francis car, driven by Mrs. Francis, was traveling west and the Allen car was traveling east. No explanation has, yet been made on the cause of the accident. The Allen car swerved on to the north lane of the road. It was reported that a car just ahead of the Francis car was almost hit by the oncoming Allen car.
Gary was in the rear seat of the Francis car at the time of the impact.
Funeral services for Gary were held Tuesday afternoon at the Veedersburg Christian Church with the Rev. Samuel Pritchard and George Mitchell officiating. Burial was in the Osborn Prairie Cemetery with the Fishero Funeral Home in charge.
Besides the parents, Gary is survived by two sisters, Gay Linn, 13, and Gloria Ann, 12, both of whom are staying with their grand-mother, Mrs. Grace Hoagland, while the parents are in the hospital. - jz
