William Colwell, 71, of Danville Route 4, died at 9 p.m. yesterday in St. Elizabeth Hospital where he had been a patient 10 hours. He had lived at the Route 4 address 49 years and in Danville since 1920. Born July 14, 1897, in Cates, Ind., he was a son of Thomas and Mamie Colwell. His schooling was at Cates. He had been employed in area mines and then for 15 years at Hyster Co. before retiring. He was married June 2, 1919, in Covington, Ind., to Oma Clarise Keller who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gilford L. Colwell of Danville, and five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Waneta) Farnum, Mrs. Paul (Dorothy) Benefield, Mrs. Paul (Margaret) Marana and Mrs. Doretta Norgaar all of Danville, and Mrs. James (Wilma) Shaffer of Waterford, Mich. Also a brother, Cecil Colwell of Lafayette, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Frank (Ruby) Atkinson of Veedersburg, Ind., and a half-brother, Roscoe Reynolds of Danville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Mr. Colwell was a member of the United Mine Workers and the Hyster Co. Local. His hobbies were fishing and gardening. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Pape Memorial Home. Russell F. McMillan will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.
