Linden - Merth Dewey Clements, 80, of Linden died at 3 a.m. Wednesday at a hospital in South Gate, Mich. She had been in South Gate visiting a son. She was born Feb. 10, 1886, a daughter of David Scott and Martha Jones Dewey in a log cabin south of New Richmond. She was a graduate of Linden High School. Surviving are two sons, Mack D. Layton of South Gate and Merlin S. Layton of Lake Worth, Fla., and a brother, John S. Dewey of Columbus, Ind. She was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers. Mrs. Merth Dewey Clements, age 80, resident of Linden most of her life, died at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in a hospital at Southgate, Mich. She had been in failing health for several years and a patient in the hospital for three days. Born February 10, 1886, in a log cabin south of New Richmond, she was the daughter of David Scott and Martha Jones Dewey. She was first married December 21, 1904 to Earl Layton, who died in 1931. She was later married to Paul Clemments, who preceded her in death in 1955. She was educated in the old Linden School and was a member of the Christian Church at Linden. Survivors include two sons, Max D. Layton of Southgate, Mich. and Merlin Layton of Lake Worth, Fla., a step-son, Robert Clements of Crawfordsville, a brother, John Dewey of Columbus; two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Helms Funeral Home in Linden with Rev. Guy Tremaine in charge. Burial was in the Linden cemetery. - kbz
