Daniel V. Clem, age 87, a prominent resident of the Covington community since 1915, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Lake View Memorial Hospital in Danville, Ill. He had been a patient there nine days following a one-year illness. Mr. Clem was born March 27, 1878, in Blount Township near Danville, Ill., the son of Marion F. and Rebecca McGee Clem. He was married in 1905 to Jean Dunlap, who preceded him in death May 30, 1918. He was married Feb. 16, 1921, to Hortense Martin, who died Oct. 25, 1960. He was a graduate of Perrysville High School and attended a business college in Danville. He became an accountant with the Presto-Lite Co. and Waverly Co. in Indianapolis and came to Covington in 1915. He was associated with the late F. R. Harden in the Ford Agency here. Mr. Clem later served as a zone accountant for the General Motors Co. in this area for five years and he served at Covington Postmaster from Dec. 21, 1933 to Feb. 1, 1943. He had farmed during his early life and continued to manage his farm until the past year when illness forced his retirement. He was active in community affairs and had been a member of the Newtown and Covington bands. Before his marriage, he had been a member of the Ringling Bros. Circus and toured the world for five years. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Ruthama Evans of Covington; and one brother, Jacob Mr. Clem of Detroit, Mich. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. Donald Ashly, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Covington, officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, north of Danville, Ill.
